April 2. I lofted the garboard planks; there is one very important thing about this plank! Once it is laid out to Harry’s measurements add 3/4″ to the scribe line, you will need it, because there is an additional scribe line that will be found only after the plank is up on the mold.
Once cut, fit it to the mold with some sheetrock screws. If she looks good remove and use it as the pattern for the opposite side. When both are fastened to the transom clamps, make a scribe tool out of a piece of scrap. Scribe the bottom of the garboard using the two center floor battens that are part of your mold. Use this method to find the plane line on each transom as well. Then plane fare.
If Adding a Plywood Bottom, Chine Logs are Necessary
I have a couple of photos for a friend that lives on Long Island, NY. If you were to put a 3/8″ plywood floor in her you will need chine logs. The 2 photographs show a scrap clamped to the bottom side of the garboard plank. You will need 3 scraps per side. Once they are epoxied into place and dry, remove the clamps and plane each piece fare with the bottom of the garboard. Once the boat is turned over and removed from the mold you will have to add 2 small pieces of wood fit where the two mold uprights were.
Once the second garboard has been traced and cut, mount both back onto the mold. Now, you can use your freshly made scribe tool to find the bottom fare line. Plane accordingly.
At this point, loft and cut the sheer plank. Once again, fit it temporarily. If it fits properly, use it as a template for the opposite side. Notice that each plank is cut with extra hanging past the transom. This extra length acts as hand grips to force the plank into place while fastening. Once glued and screwed, use a pull saw to cut the planks fare with the face of each transom.
Wait until the following day to epoxy and screw each end of the planks to the transom clamps and don’t forget to epoxy the lap. Wood flour to a honey consistency. I wait a day to do this so the planks can conform to their new shape.
Once again, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me.
