Dudley Dix – Cape Henry 21: Gunwale Guards
This afternoon I fit the gunwale guards to the top and bottom of the sheer strake! These gunwales are a full 1″ thick and 22′ in length, solid old growth fir.
Dudley Dix – Cape Henry 21: Window Hole Work
Early this morning I knocked off the high spots where I fiberglassed the window holes. Then, I mixed a couple batches of epoxy fairing compound and blocked out both port and starboard sides of the superstructure. Tomorrow I’ll sand both sides fair and paint them with Easypoxy off white. I sanded the hull with 220 grit and applied the third…
Dudley Dix – Cape Henry 21: 2nd Coat of Hull Paint
This is the second post for Tuesday. After plugging and fiberglassing the old window holes I was going to call it a day, but the weather turned nice so I put on her second coat of hull paint. If the weather holds tomorrow, I’ll put on a third.
Dudley Dix – Cape Henry 21: Fairing the Hull
Today I finished fairing the hull and, she’s ready for another coat of Jade Green. I also faired the window plugs and put 6 oz fiberglass cloth over the port and starboard side covering the window plugs. Tomorrow if it doesn’t rain, I’ll paint!
Dudley Dix – Cape Henry 21: Plugging Homemade Windows
Happy Father Day! This morning I got an early start and plugged those homemade windows. When I return to the shop on Tuesday afternoon, I will fair them and use 6 oz cloth and fiberglass them inside and out. Then, I will move back to finishing the hull paint.

While drying I started removing the interior window trim. As you can see some of the wood has just started to be compromised. This is why it’s…
Dudley Dix – Cape Henry 21: Jade Green
Yesterday evening I painted the bottom. Today I faired the sheer strake and sanded the rest of the hull, tacked it down and then put the first coat of jade green on her. Hopefully if it doesn’t rain I’ll add a second.
Dudley Dix – Cape Henry 21: New Fir Gunwales
Yesterday I faired the port side and mixed some epoxy fairing filler and applied it heavy! This stuff is pretty easy to sand and will give me a fair surface to paint and then fit the new full 1″x2″ fir gunwales. Today I also removed the homemade things that were, I believe to be windows. They leak badly, I…
Dudley Dix – Cape Henry 21
Today I start the repair and restoration of the Dudley Dix design Cape Henry 21. Back in 2011 I bought a study plan of this vessel (Cape Henry 21) and at that time after doing the materials take off along with calculating the cost of a trailer, motor, sails and rigging I opted to build a smaller sloop. But,…
