Rachel and the Dory
The “Rachel” and the Dory have both been moved. Rachel’s outboard motor needs to be serviced then she’s ready to be launched and moored. Now that the shop is free I can begin cutting the straight grain fir for the Dories 9′ 6″ oars. Once the oars are complete this vessel will be ready for the Cathlamet Wooden Boat…
Dudley Dix Cape Henry 21 Under Sail
I received this photo by email. It is “Slough Coot” under full sail just off the south side of Puget Island.
Cathlamet Steamboat Show
This weekend was the Cathlamet steamboat show! Lots of very cool steamboats. It’s all about great running steam engines. It’s fun watching these guy tinkering to get their engines running right. They offer rides to anyone that wants one! Lots of fun!! Also, I spent four days sanding “Rachel” and giving her a complete brightwork and paint job! She’s…

Here are a few pics of me and my wife Jody along with close friends Jerry and Nancy sailing the Cape Henry 21 “Slough Coot” in front of our place on Puget Island. A little background on this vessel: in 2011 I was looking at plans to build a sailboat. I wanted a traditional gaff rig sloop or…
20′ Banks Fishing Dory, USCG – Finished!
The dory is complete! The next time you see her she’ll be at the Cathlamet Boat Show. The young Osprey couple have two baby chicks. I had a friend come that had a zoom lens to take some close up shots. They are growing like weeds!
20′ Banks Fishing Dory, USCG – Installing Hardware
Today I completed all mounting of the hardware and added a couple more coats to the brightwork. Now I’ll add a few more coats to the brightwork, do a little touch up here and there, build a couple of oars and then go fishing😎.

The last couple of days we’ve pretty much completed the build. Other than mounting the hardware and adding a few more coats of cetol on the brightwork, she is complete. Next week, I’ll build a set of 9 1/2 foot oars.
20′ Banks Fishing Dory, USCG – Back to Work
It’s been a long while since my last post on the Dory. Since then, I started and finished building a campground/marina that will serve as a vacation rental. During the latter part of April, I had major back surgery. It’s not like I was on a real long vacation! Back to the Dory. Over the last 4 days, with some help…
20′ Banks Fishing Dory, USCG – Skinning the Bench
Today I put in a couple of hours skinning the removable storage bench. Next I plan to build the top of the bench and the seating area around the motor well out of full 1″ western red cedar. This cedar was also reclaimed from drifting down the Columbia River then milled right here on Puget Island.
