The “Island Maid II”, (her christened name), was built in 1945 by John Anderson on Malcom Island in the small Finnish Village of Sointula, in BC. She is 47′ in length and displaces 33 ton. She worked the British Columbia waters as a commercial fish boat until 1994.
Michael bought her from a grizzly bear tracker up in Wakeman Sound, BC, in October of 03. He sailed her to Portland Oregon. Michael then refit, restored, and converted her in 04. In 05, he sailed her to Alaska and back. Her 20,000 lb fish hold is now an aft state room with a 5′ couch and coffee table, 2 seven foot bunks, full head with shower, a utility room and 4 hanging lockers. Her working wheel house is now a saloon, with helm, galley, dinette and ‘L’ shaped settee. Her Focs’le has 2 stacked bunks, vanity, and head. The Island Maid II’s walls and ceilings are paneled in western red cedar, her soles are white western knotty pine, all are varnished bright.
This vessel now has a second chance at life, and she is glad to take her Skipper just about anywhere! She has registered and entered 3 wooden boat shows, and she has won Best In Show twice, and Best Conversion once.
In September of 2011, Brad Pease of Pease Boatworks, in Chatham, MA purchased the Island Maid II. Brad and his brother own a boat railways, repair and boat building company on Cape Cod. She, the Island Maid II, is in good hands.
